Reading Comprehension: Reading is Thinking!

Hello! I have a problem. And that problem is that I procrastinate like crazy. Right now I have a pile of homework to do for my graduate school class, but instead I am putting up files on TPT. But that's okay, because I am wicked excited about this last thing I made this weekend!

I have been having a big problem in my kindergarten class this year with students who are not thinking while they read. Specifically, I have two students with hyperlexia who can read anything, but they comprehend very little. This is the product that I have come up with to try to help my students think more while they read. If they aren't thinking, they aren't really reading!

There are a bunch of different ways to use this packet. Check it out and then modify it in a way that works for you!

One way to use this packet is to make it into a file folder activity that students can use during buddy (partner) reading. After reading the book, students can move the comprehension picture pieces from the top thought bubble to the bottom as they discuss each story element. I used velcro on the pieces and laminated them so that they are easy to manipulate. I was so happy with the way it turned out! I love it!

You could also put the pictures of the story elements on popsicle sticks that students could pull out and talk about.

This packet also contains a bunch of different comprehension writing prompts that can be used. Each writing prompt has two options, one with smaller lines and one with larger lines. You can choose which prompts best fit your students' needs!

Stop by my teacherspayteachers store and check it out!! :)
